Old fuse board? Sorted properly.
We replace outdated fuse boxes and consumer units across Gloucestershire with a modern, fully RCBO-protected board - tested, certified and notified, with no fuse wire and no guesswork.
A safer, more capable board
Older fuse boxes - rewireable fuse wire, wooden backing, no earth leakage protection - are a common find in Gloucestershire's older housing stock. They still work, but they don't protect you the way a modern board does, and they're often the reason an EICR (electrical condition report) comes back unsatisfactory.
We replace them with a board fitted with individual RCBOs per circuit, so a fault on one circuit trips only that circuit rather than plunging the whole house into darkness. Every board is tested, certified and notified as required, and you're left with the paperwork.
It's also one of the first things we check before fitting solar, a battery, or an EV charger - the extra load needs a board that can actually take it, so an upgrade often gets planned in alongside one of those jobs rather than as a separate visit.
Need general electrical work instead? That's handled by our sister company, PF Electrical.
Full board replacement
Old fuse boxes and consumer units swapped for a modern, RCBO-protected board.
RCBO protection
Individual circuit protection, so one fault doesn't trip the whole house.
EICR-driven upgrades
Board replaced where a condition report has flagged it as unsatisfactory.
Testing & certification
Every board tested, certified and notified under Part P.
Solar PV installation →
Often paired with a board upgrade to take the extra circuits.
Also coveredBattery storage →
Adding storage usually means checking the board can take it.
Also coveredEV charger installation →
A charger draws serious current - the board's capacity matters.
Boards we've fitted
A mix of finished installs and boards mid-way through - every circuit identified, RCBO-protected and tested before the cover goes back on.
Questions we're often asked
How do I know if my consumer unit needs upgrading?
Common signs include an old fuse box with rewireable fuse wire or no RCD/RCBO protection, a wooden-backed or plastic board in an escape route, breakers tripping with no obvious cause, or an EICR that's flagged the board as unsatisfactory. We'll check yours during a survey and tell you plainly whether it needs replacing.
How long does a consumer unit upgrade take?
Most domestic replacements are completed in a day, sometimes two on larger properties or where existing wiring needs tidying up at the same time.
Will my power be off during the work?
Yes, your supply has to be isolated while the new board is fitted and connected. We plan around this and it's normally back on the same day.
Is the work certified and notified?
Yes. Consumer unit replacement is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. We test and certify every board we fit and handle the notification, so you're left with the paperwork you need for a sale, remortgage or insurance.
